Among the many personal tragedies in the hard-hit state of La Guaira is that of Lucas Trejo, a 38-year-old Argentine soccer player who plays for the Venezuelan second-division club Sport Marítimo La Guaira. Trejo was at a team training camp in Caracas, located about 18 miles south, when the twin earthquakes struck. He immediately rushed back to his beachfront home in Playa Grande, La Guaira, only to find a horrific scene where his family's apartment building had completely collapsed into rubble.

Despite initial hopes that the family might not have been inside, it was later confirmed that his wife and two children lost their lives in the collapse.

Despite Bukele being long regarded as a political nemesis by the ruling Chavista movement, Rodriguez retweeted the Central American leader's message ninety minutes later, instructing the foreign ministry to coordinate the support. This paved the way for foreign rescue teams to pour into the hardest-hit areas to assist local emergency workers.
