Meanwhile, regarding a letter sent by U.S. Vice President JD Vance to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei, which multiple media outlets characterized as an effort to restart peace talks, Trump said Thursday that the communication was intended solely to facilitate the delivery of medical supplies into Iran. Iran has not yet replied to the letter, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency.

According to the IRGC statement, the two offending vessels—positioned in the eastern and western portions of the strait respectively—had switched off their navigation and positioning systems and attempted to exit via the southern route with the support of the U.S. military. Iranian authorities have consistently cautioned commercial shippers that transiting this U.S.-backed southern passage violates its maritime regulations and carries serious operational risks.

While it remains unverified whether the vessel cited by UKMTO was among the four tankers Tehran reported damaged by mines, the timing of the alert suggests it may represent a distinct maritime event.

The Defense Casualty Analysis System recorded the two fatalities under its Overseas Operations category, which includes casualties tracked by the Pentagon after it ceased using the operational name Operation Epic Fury.
