Chelsea Goalkeeper Martinez Undergoes Surgery for Broken Jaw
Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has undergone surgery after suffering a broken jaw in a clash of heads with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during Saturday's 2-0 Premier League victory. The 34-year-old Argentina international received treatment on the pitch before being taken to the hospital, later posting on social media that the operation went well and that he expects to be back in action in a few weeks. The injury forced manager Xabi Alonso to hand 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders his Premier League debut, helping the team secure their first league clean sheet since January. Martinez's absence presents an immediate challenge as Chelsea navigate a demanding stretch of fixtures. Alonso expressed full trust in Penders, who is now expected to step in as the starter for Chelsea's upcoming matches against Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool in the Carabao Cup, and Manchester United while Martinez completes his recovery.
The Collision and Injury Details
The incident occurred during the second half of the Premier League match at Hill Dickinson Stadium when Everton midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivered a free kick into the penalty area. Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez moved to defend the ball and collided heavily head-to-head with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, leaving both players down on the turf.
While Branthwaite was able to return to his feet following initial medical attention, Martinez remained grounded and required prolonged intervention from team medical staff and attending paramedics. The medical team attended to the 34-year-old Argentina international on the pitch for eight minutes, carefully securing him to a stretcher before carrying him off the field and transferring him directly to a local hospital for surgery on his jaw.
Surgical Operation and Martinez's Update
Following his admission to the hospital, reports from Argentinian media indicated that Martinez had suffered a jaw injury alongside a concussion from the impact. Medical staff at the facility subsequently performed a surgical procedure to repair the 34-year-old goalkeeper's broken jaw.
On Sunday, Martinez provided an update on his condition by posting a photograph of himself in a hospital gown across social media. In his message, the goalkeeper expressed gratitude to supporters for their well-wishes and confirmed that the surgery had proceeded smoothly. Martinez highlighted that the team's victory and clean sheet were the most critical outcomes of the match, adding that he expects to complete his recovery and return to playing within a few weeks.
Penders' Debut and Manager Alonso's Backing
Following Martinez's forced exit, 21-year-old Belgian substitute Mike Penders came on to make his Premier League debut. Chelsea originally acquired Penders from Belgian side Genk for a £17 million fee in 2024, utilizing him primarily in cup competitions prior to this league appearance. The young goalkeeper maintained composure after entering the match, preserving the clean sheet and securing Chelsea's 2-0 victory, which marked the club's first Premier League shutout since January.
Manager Xabi Alonso commended Penders' display after the match, noting that the young goalkeeper possesses personality and bravery while commanding the complete trust of the coaching staff and teammates. Alonso emphasized the importance of squad depth, stating that every player must be ready to deliver whenever called upon. He added that ensuring all members of the squad feel valued and prepared to seize their moments represents a highly positive element for the team.
Upcoming Schedule and Goalkeeping Implications
With Martinez sidelined for a projected recovery period of several weeks, Chelsea now confront a demanding sequence of high-profile fixtures across domestic competitions. The schedule begins with a home Premier League encounter against Tottenham Hotspur next Saturday, followed quickly by a trip to face Liverpool in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on October 28, and concludes with another home league fixture against Manchester United three days later.
During Martinez's enforced absence, the 21-year-old Belgian goalkeeper Penders is expected to step into the starting lineup for at least these three fixtures until the Argentina international is cleared to resume full training. Facing consecutive matches against traditional rivals across both the Premier League and knockout cup play, Chelsea will rely heavily on the young deputy keeper to maintain defensive stability during this pivotal stretch.
