Brewers Rally Past Rays to Secure 2-0 World Series Lead

Tampa Bay opened the contest aggressively, capitalizing on a first-inning error by rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt to jump on Milwaukee starter Logan Henderson. Chandler Simpson and Junior Caminero delivered consecutive RBI singles before Liam Hicks punctuated the barrage with a two-run home run, giving the Rays an immediate 4-0 lead. Tampa Bay collected three of its seven total hits on the night during that opening onslaught.

Milwaukee answered in the bottom of the first against Rays starter Drew Rasmussen, as William Contreras and Garrett Mitchell produced back-to-back RBI singles to trim the deficit to 4-2. Following the shaky opening frame, both Henderson and Rasmussen settled into form and combined to pitch 6.2 innings, keeping the score intact until strategic moves and bullpen decisions surfaced in the fourth inning.

The middle innings tilted in Milwaukee's direction starting in the bottom of the fourth, when Drew Rasmussen loaded the bases and was pulled from the mound. The Brewers capitalized on a fielding error by Rays first baseman Jonathan Aranda to plate their third run and cut Tampa Bay's lead to 4-3, though Christian Yelich grounded out to halt further damage. Both squads subsequently relied on their bullpens, with Milwaukee's relievers extending a complete shutout of the Rays after the four-run first frame.

The decisive breakthrough arrived in the bottom of the sixth inning when Sal Frelick led off against a Tampa Bay left-hander. Frelick worked a nine-pitch at-bat before launching a 408-foot solo home run to straightaway center field, knotting the score at 4-4. An inning later in the seventh, rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt redeemed his earlier defensive lapse by hitting a go-ahead single to drive in Brice Turang, completing Milwaukee's comeback and establishing a 5-4 lead.

After Milwaukee left runners on second and third in the eighth inning without extending its lead, reliever Aaron Ashby encountered immediate trouble upon taking the mound for the top of the ninth. Rays leadoff batter Jonny DeLuca cracked a double to position the tying run in scoring position right away. The 28-year-old Ashby regained his composure, striking out Victor Mesa Jr. and forcing pinch hitter Kevin Williamson into a routine groundout, which advanced DeLuca to third base.

Facing a runner on third with two outs and on-deck hitter Jonathan Aranda batting .310 this postseason, Ashby engaged Yandy Diaz in a full count. On a 3-2 pitch, the first-base umpire ruled that Diaz failed to check his swing, sealing the 5-4 victory on a controversial strikeout to conclude the contest. The escape extended Ashby's scoreless streak to 15.2 consecutive innings throughout the 2026 postseason.

Historical precedents heavily favor the Milwaukee Brewers as they look to close out the Fall Classic. In Major League Baseball history, teams holding a 2-0 advantage in a best-of-seven postseason series have compiled a 79-16 record. Within the World Series specifically, only 10 teams have ever overcome an 0-2 deficit to claim the title, with the 1996 New York Yankees standing as the last club to accomplish the feat after dropping their first two home games and rattling off four consecutive victories.

Following two consecutive sellouts fueled by more than 40,000 fans at American Family Field, the series shifts to Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, for Game 3 on Monday. The Rays will attempt to leverage their own home-field setting to halt Milwaukee's momentum, seeking a crucial victory to avoid falling into a 3-0 hole and push the Brewers within a single win of their first championship in franchise history.
