Russia's Ministry of Defence reported on Saturday, September 12, that its armed forces targeted a succession of key heavy industrial and logistical facilities across Ukraine. According to the ministry, Russian strikes hit the major Ukrainian steelmaker Zaporizhstal in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia. Moscow also claimed successful strikes against an Interpipe Steel manufacturing complex in the central city of Dnipro, as well as multiple industrial plants situated in the southern city of Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Since launching its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian military forces have methodically targeted Ukraine's power grid, defence manufacturing plants, and logistical transport hubs in a sustained effort to disrupt domestic armaments production, constrain civilian electricity and heating networks, and degrade the country's strategic supply channels.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that an early morning Russian drone strike on Friday hit two petrol stations in Kyiv, killing at least two people and injuring 12 others, including a 12-year-old boy, with four patients requiring immediate hospitalisation. Russian forces had also targeted petrol stations in the capital on Thursday, pointing to an expanded aerial campaign focused on civilian zones across the metropolitan area.

The regional governor of the Kyiv region confirmed that one person was killed in the territory surrounding the capital. Furthermore, regional governors across southeastern and northeastern Ukraine reported that Russian strikes killed three people across the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv regions, compounding civilian casualties and inflicting structural damage on local public networks.

Ukraine has conducted an aggressive long-range campaign targeting Russian industrial infrastructure and dozens of oil refineries, aiming to curtail Moscow's military revenue streams and induce domestic fuel shortages.

The Ukrainian strikes caused casualties and structural damage across multiple Russian provinces. In the Samara region, Governor Vyacheslav Fedorishchev reported drone attacks on industrial facilities, while Ilya Sukhikh, mayor of Togliatti, stated that several residential buildings were damaged and one person was injured. In the Rostov region, Taganrog Mayor Svetlana Kambulova confirmed that four commercial properties caught fire. Local officials further reported one death each in the Kursk and Belgorod regions from drone strikes, alongside two gas utility employees killed in Russian-controlled parts of Donetsk, while a Ukrainian missile attack in Volgograd injured two individuals and damaged two residential buildings and an industrial facility.

Zelensky questioned the delay in international decision-making, noting that punitive economic measures must take effect without hesitation. His remarks followed an announcement of plans to hold talks with Trump in late September, even as US-led diplomatic efforts to broker a resolution to the four-and-a-half-year conflict remain deadlocked.
