Parts of southeastern Missouri received nearly a foot of rain, triggering severe flash flooding and prompting Governor Mike Kehoe to declare a state of emergency as more storms remain in the forecast. In Reynolds County, a structure collapsed at the Bearcat Getaway campground along the Black River in Lesterville, putting about 20 people into the floodwaters, but officials confirmed that all of them, along with five previously missing campers, have been accounted for and are safe. The hazardous conditions also led to the capsizing of two boats carrying first responders during the rescue operations, though all personnel on board were successfully rescued and are safe. Local agencies and the federal search-and-rescue cooperative Missouri Task Force 1 are continuing their joint rescue efforts, with officials pledging to remain on site to assist residents until the operations are complete.

Heavy Rainfall and State of Emergency Declaration

Parts of southeastern Missouri experienced extreme weather conditions as heavy rainfall of up to a foot fell overnight in some areas, triggering severe flash flooding across the region. In response to the rapidly rising waters and the resulting hazardous conditions, Governor Mike Kehoe officially declared a state of emergency to mobilize state resources and coordinate emergency response efforts.

The threat to the region remains active, as meteorological forecasts indicate that more storms and additional rainfall are expected in the coming period. Emergency management officials are closely monitoring the weather patterns as they prepare for the potential of further flooding, while rescue teams continue their operations under challenging conditions to ensure public safety.

Campground Incident and Rescue Operations

At the Bearcat Getaway campground in Lesterville, located along the Black River in Reynolds County, a serious incident unfolded during the flooding. Sgt. Eddie Young of the Missouri Highway Patrol stated during a press conference on Friday that a group of approximately 20 people were on a structure at the campground when it collapsed, plunging multiple individuals into the fast-moving floodwaters. According to Sgt. Young, all of those who fell into the water have been accounted for and are reported to be safe.

Prior to the structure collapse, local authorities had also been searching for five campers who were reported missing at the same location, which is situated about 125 miles south of St. Louis. The Reynolds County Sheriff’s Office confirmed in a statement that these five missing campers had also been successfully located and are safe, bringing relief to the ongoing emergency response efforts in the area.

Hazards and Incidents During Rescue Efforts

During the intense search and rescue operations on Friday, the hazardous and fast-moving floodwaters posed significant dangers not only to stranded residents but also to the emergency personnel on the scene. According to a statement from the Reynolds County Sheriff’s Office, the extreme conditions led to a critical incident when two rescue boats carrying first responders capsized while navigating the treacherous waters.

Despite the capsizing of the two vessels, emergency protocols were successfully executed to ensure the safety of the first responders. The sheriff's office confirmed that all personnel who had been on board the capsized boats were quickly and safely rescued from the water, with no injuries reported. The incident highlights the severe risks faced by emergency crews as they continue to operate under highly volatile environmental conditions.

Ongoing Multi-Agency Search and Rescue

As the floodwaters continue to pose challenges across the affected areas, the coordinated multi-agency search and rescue operations remain fully active. The federal search-and-rescue cooperative, known as Missouri Task Force 1, is working alongside local emergency teams to navigate the hazardous conditions and ensure the safety of residents in the hardest-hit communities.

Ernie Rhodes, the leader of Missouri Task Force 1, emphasized the ongoing dedication of the rescue personnel deployed to the region. Describing the situation as an unfolding event, Rhodes stated that the teams are committed to remaining on the ground to serve the citizens of Missouri until their mission is fully accomplished. Despite the difficult environmental conditions and the threat of additional rainfall, emergency responders continue to coordinate their efforts to provide critical assistance to those in need throughout the disaster zone.
