Joshua Van Defeats Alexandre Pantoja to Retain UFC Flyweight Title
Joshua Van, the 24-year-old UFC flyweight champion from Myanmar, retained his title by defeating Brazil's Alexandre Pantoja via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-47, 50-45) in the main event of UFC 331 in Los Angeles on Saturday night. The victory extended Van's professional mixed martial arts record to 18 wins and two losses, cementing his position atop the 125-pound (56.7kg) division. The matchup settled a rivalry stemming from their first meeting in December last year, which ended just 26 seconds in after Pantoja suffered an accidental elbow dislocation, allowing Van to capture the belt without an outright finish. While Van defended the title against Tatsuro Taira in May, Pantoja had previously reigned over the division for at least two years. The decisive rematch directly addressed lingering public doubts over the legitimacy of Van's initial championship win. Elsewhere on the main card, lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan scored a first-round knockout over Mauricio Ruffy to secure his sixth consecutive victory and call out champion Justin Gaethje, featherweight Patricio Pitbull earned his first UFC stoppage with a first-round TKO against Dooho Choi, and heavyweight Sean Sharaf produced a 12-second first-round TKO upset over Gable Steveson.

In the five-round flyweight championship main event at UFC 331, all three judges scored the contest in favor of Joshua Van with totals of 49-46, 49-47, and 50-45. Van, competing as the first UFC champion from Myanmar, relied on disciplined striking combinations throughout the headline bout to outpoint former champion Alexandre Pantoja, pushing his professional mixed martial arts record to 18 victories and two defeats.
Following the conclusion of his second successful title defense, the 24-year-old titleholder directly addressed lingering skepticism regarding his initial championship victory. Van stated in the Octagon that while critics previously characterized his title win as accidental, this performance conclusively answered those doubts. The decisive outcome firmly resolved the controversy surrounding their first encounter, which had concluded abruptly due to an accidental elbow injury suffered by Pantoja.
Five-Round Fight Progression and Tactical Adjustments
During the opening round, Pantoja took Van down to the canvas and landed heavy punches and knees in a fierce exchange, prompting Van to fire back with a slicing elbow. In the corner between rounds, Van's coaching staff urged him to avoid an outright brawl and switch to a more tactical approach. Heeding the instructions, Van controlled distance with left-handed jabs throughout the second round and staggered the Brazilian challenger with a fluid punching combination in the third.
Pantoja regained momentum in the fourth round by securing another takedown and establishing dominant ground control, though he was unable to lock in a submission against the defending champion. In the fifth and final round, Van stalked Pantoja across the cage and dropped him with a clean overhand right, scoring a decisive knockdown that solidified his lead on the judges' scorecards to close out the championship bout.
Background of the Rivalry and Title Legitimacy
The rivalry between the two fighters originated in their initial bout in December last year, when then-champion Alexandre Pantoja suffered an accidental elbow dislocation just 26 seconds into the opening round. That freak injury brought an abrupt halt to the fight and awarded Joshua Van the UFC flyweight championship belt without a definitive finish over the Brazilian veteran, who had reigned over the 125-pound division for at least two years.
While Pantoja underwent rehabilitation to recover from the arm injury, Van stayed active by defending his title against Tatsuro Taira in May. Despite that successful defense, Van remained eager for a direct rematch with the 36-year-old former champion to validate his status as the division's undisputed leader. The five-round contest at UFC 331 provided that opportunity, allowing Van to secure a decisive victory across the full distance.

Pitbull overwhelmed Choi with sharp volume striking throughout the early exchanges before delivering a devastating right hand that prompted the referee to halt the bout at 3:28 of the opening round, snapping Choi's three-fight finishing streak with a decisive technical knockout.
The heavyweight division produced one of the fastest upsets when Sean Sharaf defeated heavy betting favorite Gable Steveson via first-round TKO in just 12 seconds. Sharaf caught Steveson immediately in the initial exchange, unleashing a blistering flurry of strikes that forced the referee to step in and end the contest. The 12-second finish registered as the third-fastest knockout in UFC heavyweight history; following the stoppage, a visibly frustrated Steveson exited the Octagon before the official decision was read while Sharaf celebrated.
