Shares of French supermarket giant Carrefour plunged 14% on Wednesday, sinking to the bottom of the European Stoxx 600 index after the company lowered its 2026 full-year profit outlook in its third-quarter earnings report released late Tuesday. The retailer attributed the downgrade directly to worsening social and security conditions across France, warning that unprecedented domestic unrest is disrupting store operations and suppressing consumer spending ahead of the critical year-end shopping season. Carrefour cut its key financial targets across the board, reducing expected operating margin growth to between 0 and 15 basis points from an earlier projection of 25 basis points, lowering adjusted earnings per share expectations to flat or slightly higher compared to previous forecasts of high-single-digit growth, and projecting a slight decline in free cash flow rather than modest growth. While the group reported a 2.3% rise in third-quarter like-for-like sales at constant exchange rates that matched FactSet expectations, its core French home market, which delivered 11.9 billion euros ($13.4 billion) and generates more than half of overall group revenues, grew just 1.2%, amplifying investor concerns over deteriorating retail trading conditions.
