Belgium Hosts France in Nations League as Mbappe Sidelined by Injury

Matchday 2 of UEFA Nations League Group A1 kicks off at King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels on Monday, September 28 at 7:45 p.m. local time (18:45 GMT). The two neighboring sides last met in the Nations League in October 2024, when a brace from Randal Kolo Muani sealed a 2-1 victory for France. Belgium, currently ranked eighth in the FIFA world rankings following a quarterfinal run at the World Cup this summer, returns home seeking to reverse that recent head-to-head record against their familiar rivals.

Belgium opened its campaign at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, where Mika Godts dribbled past three defenders to register his first senior international goal, before second-half substitute Dodi Lukebakio added the decisive second goal in a 2-0 win over Italy. Veteran playmaker Kevin De Bruyne orchestrated the midfield with an assist during his player-of-the-match display. Meanwhile, France secured maximum points in their opener against Turkiye through Kylian Mbappe's early second-half strike, while winger Michael Olise collected player-of-the-match honors to help Les Bleus hold on for a hard-fought 1-0 away victory.

The upcoming fixture presents the first tactical clash between former Dutch international Mark van Bommel and French football legend Zinedine Zidane in their respective national team roles. Both managers opened their tenures with victories in the competition's opening round. Reflecting on the matchup, Van Bommel recalled facing Zidane on the pitch during his playing days for Barcelona against Real Madrid, noting that competing against the former midfielder—whom he praised as an exceptional player and coach—adds unique significance to the managerial meeting.

Confronting a congested international schedule, Zidane indicated that France will implement squad rotation for the match in Brussels. The French manager explained that the coaching staff anticipated playing four matches within a compressed time frame and would rotate players accordingly, emphasizing that the primary objective at this stage remains building mutual familiarity across the squad. With Kylian Mbappe sidelined and multiple changes in midfield, the rotation strategy will test France's tactical depth against Belgium.

France captain and leading goal scorer Kylian Mbappe was substituted shortly after scoring against Turkiye due to a knee problem, departing the national team camp to return to Real Madrid. The forward is sidelined for two weeks until mid-October, ruling him out of the remaining fixture in this international window. In his absence, winger Ousmane Dembele is positioned to take over on-pitch leadership duties and wear the captain's armband if named in the starting lineup against Belgium.

To compensate for Mbappe's absence, France relies on an attacking trio featuring Michael Olise, Desire Doue, and Dembele to shoulder goal-scoring responsibilities. Olise arrives following strong club form at Bayern Munich, where he tallied eight goals and four assists across seven appearances in all competitions this season alongside his player-of-the-match showing against Turkiye. Together with Doue and Dembele, the forward line aims to provide direct attacking threat and versatility in Brussels.

Regarding squad availability, Belgium enters the match dealing with two injury setbacks: winger Leandro Trossard is sidelined with a heel injury, while goalkeeper Mike Penders remains unavailable due to a muscle problem. France faces midfield absences in addition to Kylian Mbappe's injury layoff, with central midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery ruled out by a thigh problem and defensive midfielder Matteo Guendouzi serving a suspension, prompting adjustments across both lineups.

Belgium's projected starting eleven features goalkeeper Senne Lammens behind a defensive line of Timothy Castagne, Nathan Ngoy, Brandon Mechele, and Maxim De Cuyper, with Nicolas Raskin, Youri Tielemans, and Kevin De Bruyne in midfield, and Dodi Lukebakio, Diego Moreira, and Charles De Ketelaere in attack. France is expected to start goalkeeper Mike Maignan behind Jules Kounde, Dayot Upamecano, Maxence Lacroix, and Andy Diouf, with Rayan Cherki, Manu Kone, and Adrien Rabiot in midfield supporting Michael Olise, Desire Doue, and Ousmane Dembele up front.
